As Editor of the Drayton Valley Western Review, I try to keep the content as local as possible, meaning the priorities are coverage of town council, school events, community events, but unfortunately what the paper is lacking is sports stories.
I know there are enough school leagues and sports teams in this community, but the trouble is that nobody is reaching out to the Western Review and submitting stories. There is a minor hockey league, the AJH, an after school volleyball league, ringette, ladies hockey men’s recreation hockey, and basketball is now running in most of the schools.
So why aren’t these schools and leagues submitting items to the local newspaper? Is it because posting to Facebook is more instant and convenient?
I don’t know what the answer is. I only wish that these groups can forward with reports, results and perhaps even player profiles. Like the School Notebook page that we have in the paper, maybe we could start a ‘Sports Scoreboard’ page whereby schools and groups can submit news, scores and other items to share with the community.
By the way, submitting a sports story doesn’t cost anything to put in the newspaper. Only ads have to be paid for. Photos to go along with the sports stories are also welcome.
We have two full pages available in our paper for sports, so there is always room to put articles in there. We also have generous sponsors who advertise on the bottoms of these two pages, so it would be extremely disappointing if these advertisers decided they didn’t want to advertise any more.
I know this community has, and is, known for “Pulling Together,” so please help us balance the content of the Western Review by sending in your stories and photos.
